Echoes of Sound

This project explores how online media has affected traditional performing arts in contemporary Chinese culture, focusing on Suzhou Pingtan, a traditional art form combining storytelling, ballad singing, and regional melodies.
The documentary includes interviews with Chen Lei, Deputy General Manager of Suzhou Bay Grand Theatre Management Co., Ltd., who offers insight into theatre operations and digital strategy, and Wu Huiqin, a professional Suzhou Pingtan performer from a renowned Pingtan family, who shares the feelings and experiences of a traditional performer facing digital transformation.
Through these perspectives, the project examines how performers and cultural institutions adapt to or resist online media, while considering audience engagement, authenticity, and the future of traditional performing arts in modern China.
